The Multi-Trade Inspector serves as a key member of the Development Services team, supporting the City’s commitment to safe, high-quality construction and customer-focused public service. This position requires sound judgment, integrity, and the ability to work independently while managing a dynamic inspection schedule. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong interpersonal skills, professionalism in challenging situations, and the ability to clearly communicate technical information to contractors, homeowners, and design professionals. Successful performance in this role requires attention to detail, consistent decision-making, adaptability in the field, and a balanced approach that emphasizes both code compliance and practical problem-solving to serve the community effectively.
- Perform field inspections for residential and commercial construction projects, including building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and energy code compliance, in accordance with adopted state and local codes.
- Inspect work at various stages of construction to verify compliance with approved plans, permits, and applicable regulations.
- Identify code violations; issue correction notices; and explain required remedial actions to contractors, property owners, and design professionals.
- Interpret and enforce adopted International Codes, National Electrical Code, and local ordinances.
- Review construction documents and approved plans in the field to confirm consistency with permitted scope of work.
- Document inspection results accurately within the permitting system and maintain detailed records.
- Investigate complaints related to construction activities and unsafe conditions; coordinate with Code Enforcement and Fire officials as needed.
- Provide technical guidance to contractors and the public regarding code requirements and permitting procedures.
- Issue stop work orders or other enforcement actions when necessary to protect public health, safety, and welfare.
- Participate in training and maintain required certifications to remain current with evolving codes and industry standards.

Preferred:
Knowledge of :
- Adopted building and construction codes and standards, including ICC model codes (IBC, IRC, IECC, IPC, IMC, IFGC), NEC, NFPA, ANSI standards, and applicable Backflow/Irrigation regulations.
- Municipal policies, procedures, ordinances, and regulatory enforcement processes related to building construction, maintenance, and inspections.
- Civil engineering fundamentals and building construction principles, including structural systems, materials, methods, and sequencing.
- Basic architectural and engineering design principles sufficient to interpret plans and specifications.
- Electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and general building maintenance and repair practices.
- General municipal operations and interdepartmental coordination within a city government environment.
- Modern office practices, permitting systems, inspection software, and related technology.
Skill in :
- Conducting comprehensive multi-trade inspections and identifying deficiencies with accuracy and consistency.
- Reading and interpreting construction plans, technical drawings, specifications, and legal documents.
- Performing mathematical calculations involving algebra and geometry as applied to construction and inspection work.
- Preparing clear, concise inspection reports and maintaining accurate records.
- Prioritizing and managing multiple inspections, deadlines, and administrative responsibilities.
- Utilizing computers, tablets, permitting systems, and standard office equipment efficiently.
- Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing, with diverse audiences.
Ability to :
- Apply and enforce codes, ordinances, and regulations with sound judgment, consistency, and professionalism.
- Interpret existing ordinances and recommend revisions or improvements when appropriate.
- Explain complex technical requirements in clear, non-technical language to contractors and the public.
- Make independent decisions in the field while exercising discretion and maintaining regulatory fairness.
- Plan, organize, and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, elected officials, coworkers, contractors, and citizens.
- Understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
- Adapt to changing regulations, technology, and operational priorities.
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance in accordance with City policy.
Physical /requirements:
Requires the ability to perform on-site field inspections requiring a moderate amount of physical exertion to stoop, crouch, climb and lift; ability to work around electrical currents and building materials in a safe manner; sufficient hand-eye coordination to perform semi-skilled repetitive movements, such as drafting, use of hand tools, data entry, calculators and basic office equipment.
Environmental Requirements:
Tasks require occasional exposure to adverse environmental conditions, temperature and weather extremes, traffic and construction hazards, electrical currents, noise extremes, etc.
Sensory Requirements:
Tasks require color, sound, odor, depth and visual perception and discrimination, as well as oral and written communications ability.
