This position performs skilled carpentry work within a correctional setting which consists of rough and finish carpentry in the construction, remodeling and repair of buildings, furniture and all other related fixtures at MCF- Faribault. This position will provide supervision to incarcerated persons doing carpentry work necessary to repair and maintain the existing building, modify existing building, or construct new buildings.

Responsibilities include but are not limited:

Perform skilled carpentry work on various construction projects, remodeling and restoration on all building and structures.

Perform skilled carpentry and/or cabinetry on building fixtures, cabinets, and furniture.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Maintenance Supervisor including, but not limited to, reviewing plans, reviewing proposed projects, and making recommendations for inventory of materials/supplies.

Provide work direction and training to assigned incarcerated persons by performing record keeping and time keeping; conducting job interviews and performance evaluations; distributing work orders; and providing quality control assessment and job skills training.

This position has direct contact with incarcerated individuals.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship in carpentry OR

  • Completion of two-year vocational/technical program in carpentry, plus two years of experience as a carpenter OR

  • Completion of one year of vocational/technical program in carpentry, plus three years of experience as a carpenter OR

  • Three and half (3.5) years of carpentry or related building construction trade demonstrating sufficient carpentry skills

All experience must include rough and finish carpentry to qualify.

Preferred Qualifications

The following qualifications are strongly desired of applicants seeking consideration for this position:

  • Experience in the installation and repair of commercial doors, door frames, and related hardware.

  • Experience in the installation and repair of commercial windows, window frames and related hardware.

  • Experience with the installation of flooring.

  • Experience with the construction and repair of cabinets, millwork and furniture.

  • Experience working in a correctional setting.

Physical Requirements

The completion of pre-placement physical components may be required for this position. These components may consist of a tuberculosis screening, commercial drivers license (CDL) drug test, and/or respirator clearance. Additional Requirements

The selection process may include screening the top candidate(s) on their criminal history, predatory offender registration, offender associations and/or other applicable background information in accordance with Department of Corrections' policy. Top candidate(s) must pass a criminal history check which includes successful completion of all sentencing and/or restitution requirements of law enforcement jurisdictions, including probation.

Employment history/reference checks, including incidents of sexual harassment, will also be conducted on the top candidate(s) in accordance with Department of Corrections' policy. This may include a review of job performance and discipline records.
